Assesment methods:
Physical Chemistry I course culminates in an exam. The notation is defined by the currently valid study regulations at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Continuous evaluation is performed in the form of short written tests related to the subjects discussed in the seminars. The short tests are given at each seminar (except for the initial seminar). At least 50 % score must be obtained in the short tests as a part of the condition for the participation in the exam. The exam is written and consists of two parts, problem solving and theory. It is possible to get through the problem solving part of the exam during the term by attending two written tests. In the case of passing these tests, the exam consists only of the theoretical part. Participation on the two written tests during the term is optional.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student acquires knowledge of fundamental laws and concepts used to explain and interpret the physico-chemical properties of matter. Students learn the properties of gases; a substantial part of the course is focused on the chemical thermodynamics and chemical equilibria.
Course contents:
States of matter: ideal and real gas, equations of state, kinetic theory of ideal gas
Thermodynamics: the first law, the second law, potential functions, the third law,
Thermochemistry: thermochemical laws, reaction quantities, the temperature dependence of reaction enthalpy
Pure substances: fugacity and activity of gases, phase transitions of pure substances
Mixtures (multicomponent and multiphase systems): activities in non-electrolyte mixtures, colligative properties, phase diagrams, condensed systems
Chemical equilibria: reaction isotherm equation, equilibrium constants of gas, liquid and heterogeneous systems, the response of equilibria to the conditions, calculation of the equilibrium composition
