Abstract:

In this paper, innovative aromatic phosphorus containing flame-retardant polyols (DOPO-MA-EG) were synthesized by employing 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10- phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), maleic acid (MA) and ethylene glycol (EG) as reactants via a two-step process. The chemical structures of DOPO-MA-EG were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Then the DOPO-MA-EG acted as a chain-extender was introduced into the main chains of rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) for generating inherently flame-retardant PUFs (FR-PUFs). Results showed that DOPO-MA-EG can endow FR-PUFs with a great flame retardancy. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of FR-PUF-4 was increased from 19.8 to 26.3% as compared to pure PUF. Additionally, the cone calorimeter result demonstrated that DOPO-MA-EG can effectively reduce the peak heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), but smoke production rate (SPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of FR-PUFs increased as the increasing of the P contents. Conclusively, the present work demonstrates that the synthetic DOPO-MA-EG is good reactive flame-retardant polyols with a potential application for PUFs.
