Abstract:

This paper reviews a large number of conducting polymer-based materials adopted for use in the field of electrorheological (ER) fluids, including polyaniline, polypyrrole, polythiophene, polyindole, and poly(ionic liquid) along with their derivatives and composites. Their synthetic routes, morphologies, ER characteristics, and dielectric characteristics are described. In addition, by investigating the particle shape, size, density, conductivity, ER characteristics, and dielectric characteristics, the basic influence of each parameter on the ER characteristics is determined, which may help establish a general formula for the design of high-performance ER materials.
