Abstract: Coumarin, the chromanone, has a keto group at position 2. It plays a vital role as a plant and human metabolite, and as a fluorescent dye. Presently, the effects of various ions on different groups of coumarin derivatives are discussed. Change in fluorescence of the compound in terms of shifts in emission peaks like bathochromic, red and blue shifts is discussed. Coumarin derivative includes a wide variety of fluorophores that are being used for sensing and imaging intention. They are important classes of fluorophore with π extended structures. Presence of metal ions imparts effect on the fluorescence property of different coumarin derivatives. Fluorescence sensors play an important role in detection of metal ions. Herein, fluorescent properties of different coumarin derivatives are discussed with emphases on the effects of different metal anions or cations.
