Abstract:
The spin crossover potential of transition metals has brought a significant revolution in the design of magnetic optoelectronic materials. Extensive work has been performed during the last two decades for the development of spin crossover materials (SCO) employing various materials alternatives. Currently, the emerging trends in research are to develop SCO materials with tunable properties such as electrical (hybrid conductive materials) and fluorescence (SCO-fluorescent materials) with extended applications in sensors, memory devices, and molecular switches, etc. Here, we have summarized the potential of reported SCO-conductive materials, progress, and prospects according to the employed conductive species such as TTF (tetrathiafulvalene) and its derivatives, [Ni(dmit)2] [dmit = 4,5-dithiolato-1,3-dithiole-2-thione], and TCNQ radicals (7,7,8,8,-tetracyanoquino-dimethane). In SCO-fluorescent materials, spin-state transition can be expressed by fluorescent signal assisted by fluorophores; hence, these materials have potential applications in information processing and magneto-optical switching. The fluorescence in hybrid optics facilitated by coordinated ligands and doped and/or grafted fluorophores is critically reviewed, and data illuminated that these material combinations have the potential to revolutionize the fabrication of optoelectronic materials.
