Abstract:

Presented work compared fluoride removal efficiency of D. sissoo-derived adsorbents and Amberlite IRA 400Cl ion exchange resin in aqueous medium. Adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature had positive and initial fluoride concentration had negative impact irrespective of adsorbent used. Moreover, solution pH inversely affected fluoride removal for bioadsorbent while resin showed maximum removal in neutral range. Removal data were fed to isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic equations to get various coefficients and insight of sorption process. RSM-based optimization and mathematical modeling were performed, and ANN was used to predict efficiency. Removal efficiency was calculated at common conditions, i.e., 4 pH, 7 g/L adsorbent dose, 10 mg/L fluoride concentration, 180 min and 25 °C temperature. The resin, CADS, TADS and RDS removed 72%, 43%, 38% and 33% fluoride. Finally, regeneration (62%, 82%, 58% and 34%) and cost analysis (800 ₹, 720 ₹, 88 ₹ and virtually zero for 50 gm) were performed for resin, CADS, TADS and RDS. Study revealed that CADS was superior adsorbent for fluoride removal because of its lower cost, ability to regenerate and removal efficiency.
