Abstract:

At present, the world is moving towards fast, reliable and sustainable solutions. Electrochemistry has become an inevitable tool for every researcher and industries in search of such immediate sustainable solution. Upcoming researches focusing on this ultimate aim should definitely count upon sustainable and user-friendly electrochemical reactions for energy generation, biosensors for detecting deadly diseases, etc. Such biosensors, utilizing electrochemical reactions to detect target molecules, promise to be the fastest, accurate and reliable way of sensing. For these electrochemical biosensors to be fast, electrocatalysts have to be utilized. Such electrocatalysts should be capable of reducing or oxidizing the target molecule, so that the estimation of analyte reduced or oxidized can be related to the analyte concentration. These electrocatalysts play a vital role in signalization as well as transduction part of the sensor. Various types of biosensors have been fabricated utilizing different kinds of electrocatalysts, like enzymes, metal nanoparticles and carbon-based materials. This review article discusses and analyses some of the most promising electrocatalysts used in biosensing applications.
