Abstract:

Zingiber montanum (Koenig) Link ex Dietr. (abbreviated as ZM), an herbal extract is an outstanding antioxidant; however, it is unstable to chemicals and light. ZnAl-layered double hydroxide (mZnAl-LDH) and the calcined mZnAl-LDH (at 300, 500 and 700 °C), showing optical and antibacterial properties, and drug delivery vehicle, were utilized to tailor the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of ZM extract. The ZM extract (obtained by ultrasound-assisted maceration) and mZnAl-LDH (prepared by co-precipitation method) or the calcined mZnAl-LDH hosts were mixed by solid–solid method. The obtained products were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, zeta potential and UV–VIS. The spectroscopic observation displayed the absorption bands at 200–385 nm due to host material and at 400–600 nm due to ZM extract, indicating the presence of ZM extract in host material. The DPPH-radical scavenging activity of composites was dependent on the type of host material based on the difference in the release profile of ZM extract. The host materials could tailor the optical stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of ZM extract as a result of the host–guest and guest–guest interactions.
