Abstract: The mode of interaction of benzotriazole compounds from their aqueous solutions with Ca- and Cu-montmorillonite was studied in order to obtain the data on the possibility of their immobilization in the structure of the solid porous substrate. Among the factors controlling the intercalation process pH of saturated solution and the nature of exchangeable cation appeared to be the most influential. Using XRD, elemental analysis, and IR spectroscopy the extent and mechanism of benzotriazole retention were determined. Whereas the interaction with Ca-monoionic form follows the mechanism of cation-exchange reaction (when benzotriazolium is intercalated), the coordination compounds of benzotriazole (as ligands) with Cu(II) in the interlayer are formed when Cu-montmorillonite is used. Moreover, the IR results revealed the chemical alteration of benzotriazole compounds quenched in the montmorillonite interlayer as a consequence of the host-guest interaction.
