Abstract: Extraction of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) by Schiff bases (salicylidenalkylimines with C2, C4, C6, C8, and C12 carbon atoms in alkyl chain) followed by their reduction into N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)alkylamines in chloroform was studied. High selectivity of Cu(II) extraction was confirmed. Other extraction characteristics (extraction curves, capacities, rate of the extraction equilibrium attainment) in dependence on the alkyl chain length and reduction of azomethine groups at the optimum conditions for Cu(II) extraction were studied as well. The retention of the copper extraction selectivity and improvement of extraction properties were found for the reduced forms of Schiff bases possessing longer alkyl chains.
