A Simple Route to N-Methylarylamines

Abstract: Thirteen ring-substituted anilines were transformed into corresponding formanilides by the action of n-butyl formate in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid and then reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to N-methylanilines in total yields 40-70 %. The method can be employed for methylation of primary and secondary amino groups bound to aromatic and heteroaromatic systems provided that they are neither sterically hindered nor strongly conjugated with other substituents.
