Abstract: Gallium arsenide samples were analyzed for traces of Na and K by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and flame atomic emission spectrometry (FAES). The sample was dissolved in hydrochloric acid and bromine. For the GFAAS method the sample matrix need not be removed. The detection limit (3s) was found to be w = 10-8. For the FAES method the sample matrix was extracted as chlorides with butyl acetate or tributyl phosphate. The detection limit was w = 3 x 10-8. The reproducibility of the results was 3-5% (GFAAS) and 5-10% (FAES), respectively.
