Abstract: The content of residual monomers in styrene—acrylic acid copolymers of
low relative molecular mass was quantitatively determined. These copolymers were produced by high-temperature (200 to 300 °C) continuous bulk
copolymerization. Gas chromatography yielded the styrene content in the
product, while liquid chromatography yielded the acrylic acid content.
Problems associated with the analyses are discussed, as well as the influence
of process variables such as temperature, residence time, monomer feed
composition on conversion of the monomers. In addition an influence of the
reaction conditions on the copolymer molecular mass and chemical composition is evaluated.
