Infrared-spectra of 2,3-dicarboxy derivatives of pectic acid

Abstract: A series of 2,3-dicarboxy derivatives of sodium pectate (oxidation degree DO 0.0 to 0.5) was obtained by a two-step oxidation of potassium pectate by NaIO₄ and NaClO₂; their IR spectra were measured using a KBr technique. The spectra were interpreted considering mainly the structural changes evoked by oxidation of pectic acid, i.e. by opening of the pyran ring of D-galacturonic acid units and formation of couples of new (C-2) and (C-3) carboxyl groups. Properties of these carboxyl groups are different from those of uronic acids.
