Abstract: The mechanism of the water-sol. ammonium persulfate-initiated emulsion polymn. of butyl acrylate at 70° was investigated. At low conversions the viscosity-av. relative mol. mass of polymer ̅Mr,v is approx. inversely proportional to the 0.50 power of the initiator concn. The viscosity-av. relative mol. masses decrease, while the rate of initiation and polymn. increases with the concn. of surfactant. The equil. monomer concn. in the particles in interval II of emulsion polymn. was const. and independent of surfactant concn. in the feed. Radical concn., no. of particles per vol. unit, and the ratio of the rate consts. of propagation and termination (kp/kt) increase, while the mean particle radius and no. of radicals per particle decrease with increasing concn. of surfactant in the feed. A good agreement is obsd. between the estd. particle radius and those obtained by light scattering measurements of final polymer latexes.
