Abstract: Selective monomethylation of the cis-2,3-diol grouping of Me α-D-mannopyranoside (I) was achieved with CH2N2 in the presence of a catalytic amt. of SnCl2 by blocking the primary hydroxyl function with the trityl group. In the reaction mixt., the distribution of 2- and 3-O-Me ethers formed depends to a certain extent on the solvent used.
