Semisynthetic cephalosporines. I. An improved synthesis of 5-aryl-2-furancarboxylic acids

Abstract:  5-Aryl-2-furancarboxylic acids were prepared in substantially higher yields via oxidation of the corresponding furaldehydes, or by basic hydrolysis of 5-aryl-2-furonitriles. The starting aldehydes were obtained by Meerwein arylation of 2-fural.
