Abstract: Triphenylphosphine (PPh3) in acetonitrile solution undergoes oxidation with
dioxygen in the presence of iron(III) compounds of the type FeX3 and
FeX3(OPPh3)2 (X = Cl, Br, NCS) as catalysts at moderately increased temperature, to give triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3). The rate of oxidation of PPh3
to OPPh3 depends on the nature of the ligand X bonded in the complex. It
increases depending on X in the order of Cl<NCS<Br. A shifting of the
equilibrium of the complexes towards [FeXn]3-n (n = 4 — 6 ) makes the oxidation rate essentially decrease.
