Benzothiazole compounds. XVIII. Preparation of benzothiazolium salts, their growth regulation effects, and antimicrobial activities

Abstract:  Benzothiazolium salts showing stimulation and inhibitory effects on plant growth have been prepared by the reaction of benzothiazole and 2-methyIbenzothiazole with alkyl halides or dimethyl sulfate. The highest stimulation effect was found with 3-alkoxycarbonylmethylbenzothiazoIium bromides, 3-methyIbenzothiazolium methyl sulfate, and 3-benzyIbenzothiazolium bromide. Good antibacterial and antifungal activities were observed with 3-methyIbenzothiazolium iodide, 3-ethylbenzothiazolium iodide, 3-methylbenzothiazolium methyl sulfate, 2-methyl-3-ethylbenzothiazolium iodide, and 3-aIlylbenzothiazolium bromide.
