Abstract: The possibility was studied of using the synthetic inorg. zeolites Potasit (I) and Calsit (II), γ-Al2O3, and the metal oxides ZnO, MgO, NiO, CuO, Al2O3, TiO2, and PbO2 as heterogeneous initiators for homopolymn. of styrene or Me methacrylate (III) in an emulsion polymn. system contg. a nonionic emulsifier and triethylenetetramine as activator. I and II can be used as initiators and are more active after contact with O contg. O3; the duration of the contact, as well as the concn. of the activator used, influence the yield of the polymer. Of the metal oxides studied as heterogeneous initiators, only Al2O3 and TiO2 were not suitable; with these polymn. under the given conditions did not take place with either monomer. Treatment of the metal oxides in an O atm. enriched with O3 did not influence the polymn. rate. It was found that polymn. of III does not proceed in the dark in the presence of ZnO or MgO which indicates that these oxides behave as photosensitizers.
