Abstract: The formation kinetics of intermetallic phases in the systems Fe-Zn and FeZn-1% Al were investigated at 735 K. Thicknesses of the intermetallic layers were detd. by using a metallog. microscope and x-ray microanalyzer. The addn. of Al influences mainly formation of Zn-rich phases and has almost no influence on the growth of other intermetallic phases. The mean interdiffusion coeff. in phases Γ1 and Γ was 3 × 10-10 cm2s-1. Growth of phases (δ1 + ζ) in the time interval 0-8 min was described by a parabolic relation. When 1% Al was added to the Zn bath, growth of δ1-FeZn7 and ζ-FeZn13 phases depended on pretreatment of the steel substrate. Pretreatment with an HCl soln. resulted in growth kinetics different from those for an NH4Cl-ZnCl2 soln. treated substrate.
