Preparation of some glycosyl derivatives of nitromethane

Abstract: Nitroalditols formed in the nitromethane synthesis with lactose, cellobiose, maltose, D-glucose, D-galactose were converted to the corresponding glycosyl derivs. of nitromethane by intramol. dehydration. β-Lactosylnitromethane, β-cellobiosylnitromethane, β-maltosylnitromethane, β-D-glucopyranosylnitromethane, and β-D-galactopyranosylnitromethane were isolated from the reaction mixts. as salts of a strongly basic anion exchanger in the OH cycle, from which they were liberated by CO₂. CD spectra of both disaccharide and monosaccharide glycosylnitromethanes confirmed their β-pyranoid structure.
