Abstract: Extremely high mol. wt. polystyrene samples [Mw = (8.84-29.4) × 106] were prepd. by emulsion polymn. with a macromol. initiator forming a heterogeneous phase. The dependences of the monomer conversion, Mw, and Mw/Mn on the concns. of the initiator (x1), of the activator (x2), and of the emulsifier (x3) as well as on the polymn. temp. (x4) were tested by a factor expt. of the half-replica type 2(4-1). The true functional dependences of the studied output parameters on x1, x2, and x3 were math. approximated by a rotatable factor expt. At conditions under which the samples attained a local min. of polymolecularity (Mw/Mw,calc = 1.552) a poly(Me methacrylate) sample was also synthesized.
