Potentiometric studies on the formation of silver(I) chelates of EDTA alkyl and isoalkyl derivatives

Abstract: A series of complexanes, (1,2-diaminopropane-, 1,2-diaminobutane-,1,2-diaminopentane-, 3-methyl-1,2-diaminobutane-, 4-methyl-1,2-diaminopentane-N,N,N'N'-tetraacetic acid) as well as meso- and rac-2,3-diaminobutane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (DBTA) was studied as to the formation of complexes with Ag(I) ions on the basis of potentiometric neutralization curves. The formation of complexes from EDTA, DCTZ, and trimethylenediamino-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid were investigated. The stability consts. for AgL3- and AgHL2- complexes at 293.2 K and ionic strength 0.1 (KNO3) were evaluated. The higher stability of Ag complexes of 1,2-diaminoalkane- and 1,2-diaminoisoalkane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acids agrees with the higher basicity. In the case of DBTA, the different complex stabilities, obsd. for the 2 stereoisomers, are explained in terms of steric factors.
