Abstract: The influence of the ionization power of the solvent (water-ethanol mixt.) on solvolysis of the σ complexes of trivalent thallium with olefins was investigated. The rate of solvolysis decreases with increasing concn. of ethanol. The two-parameter Grunwald-Winstein equation was applied to the study of reaction mechanism. The low values of the parameter m in the solvolysis of allyl alc. and 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene suggest the SN2 mechanism for RCH = CH2 and RRC = CH2 alkenes. On the other hand, the relatively high value of m in the solvolysis of 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene suggests the SN1 mechanism for the solvolysis of internally branched alkenes.
