Abstract: 5-Phenyl-2-furaldehyde and its 4-Me, 4-OMe, 4-Cl, 4-Br, 3-Cl, 3-Br, 3-F, 4-NO2, 3-NO3 substituted Ph derivs. were reduced reversibly to anion radicals in DMF on a dropping Hg electrode in a 1-electron step. These radicals were unstable and underwent subsequent reactions. The effect of the substituents on E1/2, characterized by Hammett consts., was more significant than in aq. media and was represented by the slope of +0.2 V.
