Methylthiomethyl ethers of methyl α-L-rhamnopyranoside

Abstract:  Under suitable conditions, the mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide and acetic anhydride can be applied for effective methylthiomethylation of the hydroxyl groups in a sugar unit. Thus from methyl 2,3-di-O-methyl-, methyl 3-0-methyl-, and methyl α-L-rhamnopyranoside, the corresponding methylthiomethyl ethers have been obtained in good yields.
