Abstract: Thermolysis of the title compd. (I) in naphthalene, 2-bromonaphthalene, and Me methacrylate at 90-150° proceeds almost exclusively by an induced mechanism with activation energy 120 kJ mol-1. The rate const. of induced decompn. is ∼2 orders higher than that for spontaneous decompn. at 120°. For I concn. above 0.2 mol dm-3 induced decompn. is first order. This makes it difficult to distinguish it from the spontaneous reaction which is also first order. At initial I concn. <0.2 mol dm-3 the order of the induced decompn. becomes 1.5. The consequences of induced decompn. with regard to initiation power of I for chain reactions and thermal sensitivity of its decompn. in the solid state are discussed. Thermolysis of I was examd. by calorimetry and chemiluminescence.
