Abstract: The relationship between the overall rate constant and the rate constants of
particular reaction steps calculated by the method of quasistationary concentrations has been compared with the results obtained by integrating the systems
of differential equations of chemical kinetics and with the consequences
ensuing from the Viěte theorem on roots of an equation. It has been
established that the method of quasistationary concentrations is to be regarded
as an approximate method for calculating the least (as concerns absolute value)
root of the characteristic equation which is valid both for the linear and cyclic
sequence of reaction steps.
