Furan derivatives. CXX. Synthesis and properties of 5-nitro-2-furylbenzyl sulfones

Abstract: The reaction of lithium 2-furanthiolate with 4-X-benzyl halides (X = H, CH₃, CH₃O, F) gave the corresponding sulfides. Their nitration with an acetic acid—nitric acid system followed by hydrogen peroxide oxidation afforded the corresponding sulfones. The u.v. spectra and the stability towards treatment with base of the prepared sulfones have been studied.
