Abstract: In the reactions of salicylic acids with Grignard reagents, transition metals increase the yield of keto products. Thus, 3,5-diisopropylsalicylic acid with BuMgBr in the presence of Ni forms 2-hydroxy-3,5-diisopropylphenyl Bu ketone; in the absence of Ni, 2-hydroxy-3,5-diisopropylphenyl di-Bu carbinol is obtained. The stabilization of keto products in the form of their ketyl radicals was verified in an ESR study.
