Abstract:  The synthesis of the six-dentate chelate-forming ligand 2-methyl-1,2-diaminopropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (MPDTA) is described. This complexane-type ligand is characterized by means of 1H-n.m.r. and i.r. spectra as well as the study of acid-base and especially complex-forming properties in a homologous series of complexanes: EDTA—PDTA—MPDTA. The results obtained by Potentiometrie and Polarographie investigation confirm the obvious effect of the gradual methyl substitution on the complex-forming properties. PDTA forms more stable chelates in comparison to EDTA, while the effect of the two methyl groups in the molecule of MPDTA brings about the fall of the stability constants of complexes.
