Abstract: A method for the spectrog. detn.of the most commonly occurring impurities in magnesite was developed by using model samples. The samples contained 0.1-3% SiO2, Al2O3, and CaO and 0.2-6% Fe2O3; the content of MgO was 90%. The anal. was carried out in an a.c. arc with rapid sample evapn. from the crater of a C electrode. The sample was mixed with C powder contg. Co as ref. element (304.4 nm). The effect of the chem. compn. on the excitation process of magnesite was eliminated by dilg. the sample with C powder in the ratios 1:10 and 1:20. A sample-std.-C powder ratio of 4:1:20 gave the best results. Two sets of samples were used for the measurements, the first set of stds. contained unannealed samples, and the second contained samples annealed at 1600°C for 2 h prior to anal. Annealing of model samples improved anal. parameters only in the detn. of CaO.
