Acidic groups in various 4-O-methylglucuronoxylans

Abstract:  4-0-Methylglucuronoxylan isolated from the wood holocellulose of horn­beam (Carpinus betidus ь.) by alkali extract was modified in different man­ners. I t was desalted in different ways, precipitated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, thermally degraded in a nitrogen atmosphere, and oxidi­zed with sodium chlorite at p H 3.5. Thus obtained samples were investiga­ted regarding the changes in the content of carboxyl groups and their various forms (COOH, COO^-, lactones, and esters) as well as other functional groups, which, under certain conditions, show acidic nature. The analytical procedure used for this purpose comprised kinetic evaluation of the determination of carboxyl groups by iodometry combined with the reduction of the functio­nal groups with sodium borohydride.
