Cyanatocopper(II) complexes with organic ligands. XII. Absorption spectra of the cyanatocopper(II) complexes with heterocyclic nitrogen-containing ligands in various solvents

Abstract:  The absorption spectra of cyanato-copper(II) complexes of the type Cu(NCO)2L2 and Cu(NCO)2L (L is methylsubstituted pyridine or a ligand of the quinoline or the isoquinoline group) were measured in methanol, acetone, Af,A7-dimethylformamide, dioxan, and chloroform, respectively. All the spectra show ligand field bands characteristic of distorted octahedral Cu(II) species. The complexes Cu(NCO)2L2 with L = ß- or γ-picoline and isoquinoline are completed in solutions by two molecules of the solvent in axial positions. The other complexes of this type split off one molecule L; these complexes as well as Cu(NCO)2L are solvated by three molecules of the solvent (except for chloroform). The ligand field bands in the spectra of the complexes were investigated in the given solvents and their characteristic features are discussed.
