Abstract: Mixtures of metals with their molten salts correspond in most cases to true solutions. Thermodynamic and electrochemical investigations have shown in different systems a more or less strong localization of the electrons set free by the metal. The systems may be classified in a range between two limiting states: the occurrence of free electrons and the formation of stable subions; the degree of derealization depends on the cation and the anion. On the basis of experimental investigations (electrical conductivity, chronopotentiometry, thermal analysis) of the systems M—M hal (M = = Zn, Cd, Bi, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba; hal = Сl-, Вr-, I-) the following problems have been discussed: the process of dissolution, the state of the dissolved metal in its molten halogenides and the effect of alkali metal halogenides on the solubility of the metal in the systems alkaline earth metal — alkaline earth metal halogenides.
