Abstract: Based on a classification of binary molten salts the paper deals with
some thermodynamic and transport properties of mixtures of unsymmetrical
charges МIIСl2-МICl (M" = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba; MI = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs).
Experimental determinations of electrical conductivities, densities, vapour
pressures, and e.m.f. of cells with transference were carried out, especially
the mixtures СаСl2—MCI having been extensively investigated.
From the values obtained for molar electric conductivities, molar excess
conductivities, inner transport numbers, relative cation mobilities, excess
volumes, activities, and excess enthalpies, conclusions have been drawn
and discussed on the possible structure of these molten mixtures. According
to size, charge, and polarizability, different deviations occur from the
properties of an ideal mixture that may be qualitatively explained with
a "competition" of the cations for the common anions, and with the effect
of the structure of the pure salts.
The results as a whole may be illustrated with a modified model of vacant
cells for ionic liquids.
