Universal relation for the activity of the i-th component in binary systems

Abstract: The activity of the i-th component in the binary system 'i-j' may be advantageously defined as ai = xikj/i, where the coeff. k = kj/i and characterizes the interaction of the 2 components. For xi → 1 this coeff. is identical with the Stortenbeker correction factor. This definition of the activity provides a rational explanation of the magnitude of the slope of tangent to the liquidus curve in the m.p. of the i-th substance and also has a wider field of application than some other relations used for the dependence ai = f(xi).
