Abstract: Mixtures of MgO and SiO2 (Aerosil Degussa 99.3% SÍO2) have been studied
by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy and DTA under hydrothermal
conditions. Temperatures and times were chosen in such a way that should
allow to observe the single phases of the initial stage of the reactions at the
formation of talcum and serpentine. It has been found possible to identify
by infrared absorption spectroscopy three components only, viz., the magnesium-
rich component, existing in the presence of still free brucite, talcum
and serpentine. The magnesium-rich substance as the first step of reaction
between MgO and SiO2, reacts in the presence of water with some more SÍO2
under the formation of talcum, or it possibly crystallizes as serpentine without
changing its composition.
