Thiophene derivatives. II. α,β-Unsaturated ketones of phenylthiophene series

Abstract: The preparation is described of  α,β-unsaturated ketones of t h e phenylthiophene series by condensation of 5-(X-phenyl)-2-thiophenecarbaldehydes (X = 4-N0₂ , 4-Cl, 3-Cl, 4-Br, H, 4-CH₃ , 3-CH₃, 4-OCH₃) with acetone, 2 - acetyIfuran, 2-acetylthiophene, and acetophenone. Infrared and ultraviolet spectra of the prepared derivatives are interpreted. The presence of individual conformers is discussed by means of t h e stretching vibrations of a carbonyl group and those of the C = C bonds.
