Chemical reactions in molten  Na₃AlF₆—Si0₂—Al₂0₃—AlF₃ mixtures

Abstract:  The system Na₃AlF₆ —SiO₂ — AI₂O₃ —AlF₃ was studied with regard to the possibility of a one-step production of Al—Si alloy by the electrolysis of the cryolite-based melts. It was found that in the above system the components react and SiF₄ is formed. The dependence of the SiO₂ losses on the melt composition and on the interaction of silica and alumina in a cryolite melt is discussed.
