Measurement of the dehydrochlorination rate of poly(vinyl chloride) at low degrees of conversion

Abstract: The kinetics of dehydrochlorination of polyvinyl chloride is frequently
monitored by means of hydrogen chloride which is split off and expelled from
the reaction vessel with the appropriate carrier gas. Hydrogen chloride is in
turn trapped in an aqueous solution and its amount is determined by conductometric
or Potentiometrie titration. This paper points out the influence of
the eliminated hydrogen chloride by its adsorption on the surface of glass
parts of the device on results of the measurement. A device for countercurrent
absorption of hydrogen chloride from the carrier gas in silver nitrate solutions
is also described.
