Abstract: Two procedures of the fractional extraction of acid polysaccharides from
the holocellulose of Klauditz were tested and compared. These procedures
comprised a single acid and three alkaline steps. The analytical composition
of particular fractions wras reviewed but the chief attention was given to
the composition of acid portions of hydrolysates. Some uronic and aldouronic
acids were isolated and identified which indicated the presence of
other acid polysaccharides besides 4-O-methylglucuronoxylan. These
polysaccharides were present mainly in the acid fraction irrespective whever
its extraction wras performed before or after the alkaline extractions.
The same polysaccharides were obtained by using a simple extraction of
holocellulose by ammonium oxalate. On the basis of the composition and
isolation procedure of these acid polysaccharides, it may bo supposed that
the essential part of these substances originates from pectic substances
which are always present in small amounts in wood.
