Nitrate Group as a Ligand in Solid Copper(II) Complexes. The Structure of Cu(N0₃)₂ • 2.5H₂О

Abstract: The structure of copper(II) nitrate hydrate, which has been assumed to be a trihydrate, has been solved by X-ray structural analysis. The correct composition of this substance is Cu(N0₃)₂  •2.5H₂0 where only two molecules of water coordinate Cu(II) while the remainder is bound merely by hydrogen bonds. The pith of this study is an interpretation of X-ray structural analysis informations about Cu(N0₃)₂ • 2.5H₂0 and correlation of this interpretation to the knowledge gathered from the investigation of solutions as well as to the results obtained by other authors in an analogous region.
