Kinetic study of bromate reduction by hypophosphites

Abstract:  The kinetics of the reduction of bromates by hypophosphites has been studied polarographically by means of the time-dependence of bromate-wave. After passing the induction period over, the reaction is being governed by kinetic equation of the first order with respect to bromates. On the basis of the kinetic study the reaction schema has been proposed, according to it the rate determining step appears to be the conversion of inactive hypophosphorous acid to the active form. In presence of hydrogen chloride in the solution the reduction mechanism is more complicated obviously.
