Condensation of 3-indoleacetic acid with phthalic anhydride by the Gabriel and Oglialoro-modification of the Perkin synthesis

Abstract: Indolyl-3-acetic acid reacts with phthalic anhydride under conditions of Perkin synthesis to form 3-(3-indolylmethine)phthalide which undergoes rearrangement in methanol in the presence of alkali metal methoxide to yield 2-(3-indoly l)indane-1,3-dione.
