Diels-Alder reaction of alkylcyclopentadienes and dienophiles of the aeryl type. II. Reactions with methyl vinyl ketone

Abstract: The synthesis of bicyclic ketones was effected by the reaction of mainly 1-alkylcyclopentadienes with methyl vinyl ketone. As was found by gas chromatography, the adduct of 1-ethylcyclopentadiene with methyl vinyl ketone is a mixture of endo and exo isomers of 1-ethyl-5-acetylbicyclo[2,2,1]-2-heptene and 1-ethyl-6-acetylbicyclo[2,2,1]-2-heptene. The endo and exo isomers in the reaction mixture were identified by isomerization in the presence of sodium ethoxide.
