Decomposition of dicumyl peroxide and α,α'-bis(tert-butylperoxy)-p-diisopropylbenzene in polyethylene

Abstract:  The decomposition of cumyl hydroperoxide and α,α'-bis(t-butylperoxy)-p-diisopropylbenzene in polyethylene was examined basing upon the change in solubility of the polymer during its cross-linking process. The activation energy of cumyl hydroperoxide decomposition was found to be 34 kcal mol-1 which is in the range of values ascertained during its decomposition in low- -molecular hydrocarbons and polyisoprene rubbers (32 —36 kcal mole-1). In the case of α,α'-bis(t-butylperoxy)-p-diisopropylbenzene the activation energy value established in this way (37 kcal mole-1) is virtually in full accordance with that obtained by analytical method in polyethylene and n-octane, as well.
