Abstract: The potential arrests detd. on the E-τ curves recorded with a Pt electrode in Na3AlF6-Al2O3 melts were studied. These arrests are attributed to the oxidn.-redn. processes which take place at the neg. electrode. At 1000°, of the total potential of 2.06 v., 1.69 v. is for the cathodic process and 0.37 v. for the anodic process. For the 4 (A,B,C,D) arrests, A is at -1.914 ± 0.003 v., B at -1.692 ± 0.002 v., C at -1.511 ± 0.002 v.; and D at -1.307 ± 0.002 v. The reactions causing the arrests are: A Na → Na+ + e; B Al → Al3+ + 3e; C Al → Al+ + e; D Al → Al2+ + 2e.
