Abstract: In this review methods and practical use of gas radiochromatography are surveyed.
In the first part radiochromatographic methods from the viewpoint of radioactivity
measurement (discontinuous analysis, continuous analysis, combustion method) and of
the radiation detectors used (GM-counters, proportional counters, scintillation counters,
ionization chambers) are described. The type of detector used is given by type and energy
of radiation, as well as by working conditions of analysis (carrier gas, chemical composition
of separated mixture etc.). Each radioactivity detector is suitable for certain group of
labeled compounds and radionuclides only.
The second part of the paper deals with practical examples of use of gas radiochromatography:
analysis of permanent gases, separation and analysis of artificial radionuclides,
preparation and analysis of labeled compounds, applications from the field of hot-atom
chemistry, investigation of the course of chemical reactions and the use of gas radiochromatography
in biochemistry.
